Centre Co., PA (WJAC) — A Centre County man accused by the Pennsylvania Game Commission of illegally shooting a bear with a pistol appeared in court Wednesday morning where he waived his preliminary hearing. A state game warden says 87-year-old Sheldon Sharpless admitted to shooting the bear in his back yard in March. Sharpless reportedly said he shot the animal because it “destroyed his bird feeders." Authorities say the bear had to be put down.
CLEARFIELD – A Clearfield County man was charged with homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence Friday morning in connection to a crash that killed a woman in July. Gregory Millinder Jr., 32, of Madera, also was charged with aggravated assault by vehicle while driving under the influence, driving under the influence of alcohol or controlled substance, involuntary manslaughter, endangering welfare of children, recklessly endangering another person, driving on roadways laned for traffic, careless driving, reckless driving and off-road lighting.
THE LATEST |Somerset Co., PA (WJAC) — Somerset County coroner Cullen Swank has identified the victim of Monday's fatal mining accident in Conemaugh Township. Swank says 37-year-old Brandon Frederick, of Johnstown, was killed after he became trapped between a shuttle car and a mine rib. Authorities say Frederick suffered multiple blunt force and crushing injuries to his torso. The coroner's office has ruled his death as accidental. 2nd UPDATE |Officials with the Department of Environmental Protection say they have ordered the operators of the Maple Springs Mine in Conemaugh Township, Somerset County to temporarily cease operations following Monday's workplace fatality.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The driver and a suspected gunman are in custody in the shooting of eight Philadelphia high school students at a bus stop, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press on Monday. Police have identified two juveniles who were also seen jumping out of the car and running toward the bus stop with the 18-year-old suspected shooter, but have not yet located them, according to the official, who was not authorized to discuss the case publicly before a news conference set for late Monday afternoon.
